A South Korean has crossed the heavily fortified border in what would appear to be a rare defection to North Korea. Seoul has used a military hotline to ask the North to keep the person alive. It implemented a shoot-on-sight approach since the start of the pandemic. From the South Korean capital, Laura Bicker reports.

* convict : to decide and state ofiicially in court that somebody is guilty of a crime(유죄 판결하다); 

-  There wans't enough evidence to convict her.

* trick :  to make somebody belive something which is not true, especially in order to chat them(속이다); 

- I'd been tricked and I felt stupid.

* revolutionary : connected with political revolution(혁명적인); involving a great or complete change(혁신적인)

- At the time, this idea was revolutionary.

The times and the FT both report that Mercedes Benz has made a prototype electric car which can travel the length of Britain on a single charge, that is about three times that the average range of other electric cars. Its commercial model based on the technology will go on sale in 2024. The FT says it is an attempt to reassure customers that a lack of charging infrastructure need not be a barrier to buying a battery-powered vehicle.

Novak Djokovic is facing deportation from Australia after having his visa revoked on arrival in Melbourne. There was a public outcry after the tournament's organizers announced he'd been given a medical exemption from strict vaccine rules to defend his Australian Open title. The world number one who's never revealed his vaccination status was held at the airport overnight before being moved to a quarantine hotel.

* deportation: the act of forcing somebody to leave a country, usually because they have broken the law or because they have no legal right to be there(추방)

An Afghan baby who was handed over a wall to soldiers at Kabul Airport during last summer's evacuation has been found and reunited with his family. The boy disappeared in the mayhem at the airport as thousands of people tried to flee Afghanistan. Our correspondent in Kabul, Quentin Summerville has the story.

 

The world number one tennis player Nobak Djokovic is waiting to hear if he'd be deported from Australia despite winning a court case over the decision to ban him from the country. The judge ruled that border officials had failed to follow proper procedures when they revoked his visa. But the Australian government says it could cancel the visa again. 

 

The body which runs men's tennis, the ATP has said the drama involving Novak Djokovic in Australia has been damaging on all fronts. It's called for more clarity on the rules for entering Australia and also urged players to get vaccinated. Djokovic has been seen practising at the Melbourne Park venue where he now hopes to defend his Australian Open title next week. 

 

Nobak Djokovic has apologized for a mistake on the immigration forms he submitted to Australian authorities. One document said the world's number one men's tennis player had not traveled to any other countries in the 14 days before he traveled to Melbourne, but he'd been seen in both Serbia and Spain. In a statement posted online, Djokovic said he wanted to correct misinformation. From Melbourne, our correspondent Shaimaa Khalil reports. 

 

 Nobak Djokovic has been included in the draw for the Australian Open Tennis Tournament even though he's still waiting to hear whether he'll be able to stay in the country to take part. On Monday, the defending men's singles champion won a court challenge against attempts to bar him because he's not vaccinated against COVID. But ministers are still considering whether to use their powers to deport him.

Federal judges in Australia have ruled that the men's number one tennis player Novak Djokovic should be deported, ending his hopes of competing in the Australian Open tournament which is due to begin tomorrow. It rejected his final attempt to stay in the country after a bitter 11-day dispute about his COVID vaccination status. Afterwards, the defending champion said he was extremely disappointed, but would respect the court's decision. 

 

And the Telegraph covers the discovery of a rare gold coin by a metal detectorist in Devon. The item was minted in 1257 and features an image of the then King, Henry lll. It's the first of its kind to be found in more then 260 years and it's expected to sell at auction for at least 400,000 pounds.

 

Labour have accused the government of being in chaos and again call for Boris Johnson to resign after Dominic Cummings unleashed a new attack on the Prime Minister, claiming he lied to Parliament about a gathering in Downing Street at the height of the first lockdown. Mr Johnson's former senior adviser who's now become one of his fiercest critics said he was prepared to swear under oath that the Prime Minister knew it was a drinks party, a claim denied by Number 10. 

 

Boris Johnson has announced that the extra Coronavirus measures introduced in England followig the discovery of the Omicron variant last month will come to an end next week. There will be no mandatory requirement for face coverings. The advice to work from home will end and there will be no need to show a COVID pass to enter large gatherings.

 

 

Queen there with an immortal question, who wants to live forever? Well, it seems Jeff Bezos does, or at least longer. The billionaire Amazon founder is putting a lot of money behind Altos Labs. It's a biotech start-up researching how to prolong human life. And the latest world-famous scientist it has recruited is Hal Barron as its chief executive.

North Korea has launched another ballistic missile off its east coast. According to monitors in South Korea and Japan, it's the seventh such test in the space of a month. Pyongyang has not tested its long-range intercontinental ballistic missiles or nuclear weapons for nearly five years, but has instead launched shorter range hypersonic and cruise missiles.

 

 

Tennis history was made in Melbourne today with Rafael Nadal beating world No.2 Daniil Medvedev in five grueling sets to win the Australian Open. It means Nadal has set a new record in men's tennis of 21 Grand Slam singles titles. He missed the second half of 2021 through injury, and he only returned to competitive tennis six weeks ago. 

 

 

 

Denmark has become the first European Union country to lift all of its domestic COVID restrictions. It imposed a lockdown in December to combat the Omicron variant but it's now scrapped all remaining curbs saying the virus is no longer a critical threat.
